Malcolm McLaren began playing Highland bagpipes in Tasmania, Australia, when he was 10 years old. Later on, after travels in the United Kingdom and Ireland he became interested in Northumbrian, Border and Uilleann pipes.

Malcolm has been making synthetic chanter reeds since the mid-1990s and has worked consistently on development from his workshop in Brisbane.

The McLaren Synthetic Reed is played all over Australia and the world by pipe bands, as well as solo musicians.
